Child Centered
Play Therapy
Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a non-directive, developmentally appropriate model first developed in the 1940’s. Virginia Axline built on Rogers’ Person-Centered Theory, since then there have been over 62 outcome studies verifying its efficacy (Ray & Landreth, 2016).
CCPT provides a neurosequential model and a facilitative relationship where the therapist attempts to understand how the child views her world through the act of play. Personal phenomenological experience determines growth and either impedes or enhances a person’s natural movement toward self-actualisation.
Research
Research suggests that CCTP is a suitable modality for children regardless of the presenting problem with positive effects recorded over a broad spectrum of presenting issues. CPPT does not focus on the presenting issue; it is the safe, relational-based interactions between client and therapist that provide for abreaction. Questioning the child is avoided as direction will act as an impediment, the therapist must trust that child knows what she needs and if facilitated the child will strive towards toward self-actualization.
CPT is not time-limited which can be a barrier due to the financial and time commitment required. Although perhaps more directly suited to children between the ages three to twelve, CCPT is also used with adolescents and has been shown to provide
an alternative means for them to experience counsellor empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuineness, without the pressure to talk (Cochran et al., 2010).
